An edible forest garden is a multi-layered horticultural ecosystem that produces a variety of crops and other benefits while improving the environment. It is also a way to prepare for climate change and the challenges it brings to food production.
Forest gardens for all - developing a regional forest garden network project
The Kurki Ecovillage Association together with the Teisko Salonsaari Support Association have received EU rural funding from the Pirkanmaa ELY Centre. The Forest gardens for all - developing a regional forest garden network project started on 1.10.2025 and will continue until the end of 2027. The project aims to develop sustainable food production methods, strengthen cooperation networks, identify the needs of different target groups and increase the number of forest gardens in Pirkanmaa region.
Communication, information sharing and networking are a key part of the project's activities. The project will organise courses, workshops, webinars and study visits open to all to learn more about forest gardens and how to set them up. Beneficiaries of the project include interested gardeners and farmers, researchers, teachers and students, as well as ordinary consumers. An edible forest garden is also a tourist attraction.
As a result, the knowledge of target groups about edible forest gardens will be strengthened and networking between different actors will be promoted. The understanding of food production will be deepened through practical activities. The Kurki ecovillage and Teiskon Salonsaari are living examples of forest gardening, from whose experiences others can learn.
